Introductory Remarks

Here, we provide work we have done on the Second London Baptist Confession of Faith (1677/89). You will find articles that Drew has written on Chapter 1, audio from a lecture series Drew did for RBFI, and lectures that Daniel was doing in a Sunday School class. The dates shown are not actual dates of the lectures. They were chosen to ensure things show up in order. Sometimes the question-and-answer time (or a portion of it) has been removed from the recording. The general structure of the Sunday School lectures is:

  1. Meditation on a text that speaks to the doctrine

  2. Historical Background to the Doctrine

  3. Exposition of the Confession

  4. Outline of some contemporary challenges to the doctrine (there was rarely time for this portion)

  5. Assignment of homework

Handouts are provided along with the lectures. (At some point, these may be available in video format.)

The copy of the Confession used and recommended is that published by Broken Wharfe in Leather Hardcover and Solid Ground Christian Books in Paperback.

Part 1 opens with a conclusion on Chapter 8, and Part 2 includes a discussion of Ames (also in reference to Chapter 8). Some follow-up on free will is provided at the beginning of the treatment of Chapter 10 as well.

2LBCF (1689): Chapter 10: Effectual Calling

Lesson opens with brief explanation of compatibilism (from Chapter 9), and the Ordo Salutis. The treatment of Chapter 10 is concluded at the beginning of the treatment of Chapter 11.
